Events
The Digital Civil Engineering Group plans to organise a range of regular events to promote knowledge exchange, collaboration, and community within the Department and the wider infrastructure sector. Our proposed events include weekly research seminars, annual industry showcases, and distinguished lectures featuring leading figures from academia and industry.
Dissemination Events – Weekly Lunchtime Seminars
Planned to be held every Friday during term time, these seminars bring together researchers from across the Civil Engineering Division, including Structures, DRF, CSIC, and FIBE3 CDT. Each group takes turns presenting current research and project updates in an informal lunchtime setting.
- Purpose: Foster cross-disciplinary exchange and student engagement.
- Format: 45-minute talk + discussion, followed by informal networking.
Annual Distinguished Industry Lecture
Sponsored by leading industry partners such as Trimble, Nemechek, and Bentley Systems, this annual event features a C-suite speaker who shares insights into the future of digital construction and infrastructure engineering. The lecture is followed by a reception to support fundraising for group initiatives, student activities, and endowed professorships.
- Purpose: Inspire collaboration between academia and industry.
- Timing: Held each spring.
Annual Industry Research Showcase
A one-day event that highlights the group’s latest research and industrial partnerships. The showcase includes poster sessions, short presentations, and collaborative workshops designed to identify future research challenges and opportunities.
- Purpose: Disseminate research outcomes and strengthen academic–industry links.
- Audience: Open to sponsors, collaborators, and the wider engineering community.
Training Sessions – HPC Training
Each year, the group plans to organise training sessions in collaboration with the University’s High-Performance Computing Service to introduce students and researchers to best practices and access to the University’s HPC.
Community & Networking – Social and Networking Events
To maintain a strong community, the group plans to host informal networking activities throughout the year, including the annual group photoshoot, start- and end-of-year BBQs, Friday “pints after work,” and pre-Christmas gatherings.
- Purpose: Strengthen collaboration and team culture.
